Author & Activist
Grant Winning Writer & Health Advocate
Her Beginning
Sakina’s first experience with non-academic writing came when her eldest brother gave her a journal at the age of 12. She found journaling daily provided her with a creative outlet, helped her to work through emotions, and to build confidence. Through journaling, in an online community this time, Sakina realized she had a knack for telling stories. In 2009, Sakina became a paid journalist of Examiner.com for seven years. On the side, she began publishing short fiction stories to Figment.com. It was after a life-altering diagnosis in her late 20s that Sakina penned a memoir under a pseudonym aiming to help others cope with living with chronic illnesses. After attending many webinars on the subject of children’s books, she wrote Stepmoms and Numbers: A Story of Love & Counting in 2020 (currently on sale in our shop!)
3-year-old Salama feels strange about having a new parent in her life. Can her stepmom help her see that “one heart can love many” by using numbers to enchant and entertain even the most staunch little skeptic? Cover art & illustrations by Hamil Ma
“Writing doesn’t have to hurt. It does involve inherent honesty though, so if you make a habit of being honest, writing becomes sheer pleasure.”
Her Goal
Sakina continues to write regularly on the themes of self-discovery, the supernatural, & non-fiction with the hopes of producing a feature film or episodic series someday.
Additionally, she actively participates in writing incubators & competitions & was one of the 2020 Muslimah Writers Hub contest winners, which spearheaded her entrance into the world of published authors (Ramadhan In Isolation: A Muslimah Writers Anthology). Sakina served as an active board member of Arizona Interfaith Power & Light which is a united, spiritual response to the climate crisis. In 2020, she won a Pillars Fund grant for her writing & activism on her Facebook page, Sakina Fatima Al-Amin.
